Kansallis-Osake-Pankki (KOP) was a Finnish commercial bank operating from 1889 to 1995. It was created by the fennoman movement as a Finnish language alternative to the largely Swedish language bank, Suomen Yhdyspankki (Föreningsbanken i Finland). The two banks were merged in 1995 to form the Merita Bank. Merita Bank was later merged with Swedish Nordbanken to form Nordea.
I did some investigation on this check, and that's what I found out:
This Check belonged to Finnish journalist Hertta Myllymäki. I was wondering about that woman, and, after a long search, I found an article in the newspaper "Helsingin Sanomat", written by her daughter, Paula Myllymäki.
"Hertta Myllymäki died September 27, 2012 in Myllypuro, in the center for the elderly people in Helsinki, at the age of 92 years old.
She was born August 9, 1920 in Helsinki. Made an excellent career in the Finnish press. Her research at the Institute of Social Sciences was a continuation of her Finnish home: her mother, Martha Salmela-Järvinen, was also the head of the Social Council. After deciding to study in 1939, she began her career as editor of "Hämeen Kansassa". The following year she was invited to the Finnish Social Democratic Party.
Among other articles, Hertta disclosed Finnish public health problems, discussed this topic with scientists and doctors. As an interviewer, she was very popular among politicians and writers. She remained, by her nature, always in the background, and does not hold itself upfront in any way.
Hertta and her husband, Paul Myullimyaen, shared their hobby - tourism. In the late 40s, they are on a motorcycle with a sidecar, moved across the Alps to Italy ... ".
This is not the whole article about Hertta. Unfortunately, I do not speak Finnish language for a more accurate translation. So, if you're interested, you can find the original at internet site of the Finnish newspaper "Helsingin Sanomat".
I cannot say exactly why I looked for that information, the owner of the check. I guess, I was curious to uncover a short episode from the life of a Finnish journalist, who cashed this check in the USSR, in 1960th, and could not even imagine that this cheque would be lying in my father's-in-law book for a long time and then will be in my collection.
I even tried to write in "Helsingin Sanomat" with the request, if possible, to pass my email to Hertta's daughter. May be, she would be interested to receive a copy of this cheque from me.
It certainly could seem to be funny to someone, but I, personally, would be very interested to get something, that used to belong to one of my parents more then 50 years ago and, my mom or dad, did put a signature on it. Unfortunately, the response from the newspaper never came back.
Revers:
White background.
Comments:
This Cheque printed by Finish Bank "Kansallis Osaka Pannki, Helsinki" for the Finnish citizens and permanent residents, temporarily visiting USSR. Had to be cashed in the "Bank of Foreign trade" in USSR.
Was found in the old book, in Karelia, Russia by my father in law, and then referred to me. How does it appeared in the house of my father in law is unclear, no possible explanations.
