Bohdan Zynoviy Mykhailovych Khmelnytsky (Богдан Зиновій Михайлович Хмельницький, 27 December 1595 (6 January 1596) - 27 July (6 August) 1657), was the Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (now part of Ukraine). He led an uprising against the Commonwealth and its magnates (1648-1654) which resulted in the creation of a Cossack state. In 1654, he concluded the Treaty of Pereyaslav with the Tsardom of Russia.
On the background is an ornament from the era of Khmelnytsky.
Bottom left are the flowers Malvas.
Malva is a genus of about 25-30 species of herbaceous annual, biennial, and perennial plants in the family Malvaceae (of which it is the type genus), one of several closely related genera in the family to bear the common English name mallow. The genus is widespread throughout the temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Europe. The word "mallow" is derived from Old English "malwe", which was imported from Latin "malva", cognate with Ancient Greek μαλάχη (malakhē) meaning "mallow", both perhaps reflecting a Mediterranean term. A number of species, previously considered to belong to Lavatera, have been moved to Malva.
The leaves are alternate, palmately lobed. The flowers are from 0.5-5 cm diameter, with five pink or white petals. The color mauve was in 1859 named after the French name for this plant.
Denominations in numerals are in top corners, in words lower in center.
Revers:
St. Elias Church (Іллінська церква) - church in the village Subotov, Chigirinskiy district of Cherkasy region, built in 1653 (according to other sources - in 1656) on the orders of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky as generic church-tomb.
In 1657 he was buried in Subotov.
Denominations in numerals are in all corners, in words lower in center.
Comments:
There was a mistake made by printing of this banknote before 2001.
The inscription in Ukrainian (on reverse) was saying: "Церква в селі Суботів".
After 2001 it was corrected and inscription became as: "Церква в селі Суботові".
With this signature issued since 5 March 2001.
Designers: Vasyl Lopata and Boris Maksimov.
I got this note in Odessa, Ukraine, in 2008.
